Jakob's Night
Night was falling and Jakob was on the run. His brother, Esau, with four
hundred armed men, would soon overtake him. All his life, Jakob had been
a deceiver and now, once again, he plotted to outwit his way out of his
brother's wrath. Scared and alone, Jakob sensed a man behind him. Little
did he know that this man would change his life. All night they fought,
Jakob struggling as he never had before. His life of trickery played through
his mind. If he could just be spared this night, he would right all the
wrongs, put the deceit behind him-he would become a new man. But as they
fought, the assailant did something no ordinary man, not even a warrior
like Esau, could do. With a touch, Jakob's hip was thrown out of socket.
At that moment, Jakob no longer struggled against the "man"
but clung to him, not letting him go, pleading for a blessing. On the
night that Jakob wrestled with God, his past was erased and his name was
changed. From Jakob to Israel, "Supplanter" to "One who
struggles with God." He became a new creation! This is the purpose
and plea of Jakob's Night!
Although the group started small in a humble dorm room many years ago,
the mission has remained immutable. Through the different incarnations
of the group before they became Jakob's Night, the goal has always been
to share their own hopes, dreams, and struggles with God with whoever
is willing to listen. God has truly blessed their efforts and their willingness
to be led as far as possible.
The ministry opportunities have abounded since beginning their tight touring
schedule during the summer of 2002. Playing almost every weekend from
Indiana to North Carolina has put them in contact with the most wonderful
people on the planet (well, at least the Eastern U.S.). Not knowing what
God has in store for them, Jakob's Night looks to the future hoping to
bless the world with the news that the most powerful being in the universe
seeks a personal relationship with each and every one of us. Oh yeah,
they have a great time doing it, too!
